Hello, dear reader! Welcome to your Weather Report, a sometimes-weekly column where I recommend some articles, a book, a movie, and some music for readers to consume.

Here's what you're getting this week:

  1. Read my latest story about a new law that radically changes Puerto Rico's transparency law for the worse.
  2. Essays, articles, and columns about: ICE's skyrocketing surveillance capability, when your source gets killed, Puerto Rico governor's campaign team being rewarded with big contracts, and surveillance cameras revealing everything to the world.
  3. No book this week because I've been too busy to read.
  4. A film that mixes John Le Carré political intrigue with giant fighting robots. It's the first in a trilogy and the second film is right around the corner.
  5. Four songs I've liked recently.

What I Did This Week:

Two weekends ago, the Governor of Puerto Rico signed a bill into law that radically changes access to public information in the archipelago. The bill was widely opposed by basically everybody, including journalism and civil society organizations. Read my latest story about the law and all of its horrible changes here.

Puerto Rico Signs Bill Critics Say Is a Threat to Public Information
Over the weekend, Governor Jenniffer González-Colón signed a controversial bill into law, placing new restrictions on access to public information through records requests. Critics say that it hurts transparency and democracy on the archipelago by extending wait times for records requests, making certain information confidential, and requiring requestors’ identities be published.
