Consuming 09/07/2025

Hello, dear reader! Welcome to Weather Report, a weekly column where I recommend a book, a movie, some possibly underlooked articles, and music for paying subscribers.
Here's what you're getting this week:
- Read my story on maritime pilots suing New Fortress Energy over "serious safety concerns" concerning their LNG vessels.
- I got a fellowship for reporting in Puerto Rico. Be on the lookout for that story early next year.
- A tension-filled elegy about animal extinction and the love that comes from their keepers.
- Essays, articles, and columns about: boat strikes in the Caribbean, lottery corruption, CEO thievery, and spec ops missions
- An intricately designed and whimsical 90's science fantasy film.
- A podcast about the security state and two songs that I liked.

Maritime Pilots Sue New Fortress Energy Over "Serious Safety Concerns"
Last weekend, I found a lawsuit several pilots had presented against the Pilotage Commission and NFEnergía, a subsidiary of New Fortress Energy (NFE). The pilots allege they have "serious safety concerns" with the changes being made to the tugboat configuration being used to tow LNG vessels in the San Juan Bay. As keen readers will remember, this is not the first time that NFE – which manages generation assets and sells LNG to Puerto Rico – has been accused of unsafe practices. Another lawsuit, which I believe no one on the archipelago has picked up on, accuses them of building their Fast LNG facility in Altamira "in a manner that risked a catastrophic safety disaster.”
The story published on Wednesday and I'm not going to lie, I was very upset when I got scooped on it (especially by outlets that don't even reach out for comment). But, alas, so it goes. There will definitely be more to come from me on this front and for The Latino Newsletter. So, be on the lookout for that soon-ish.

It's Fellowship Season, Baby!
A few weeks ago, I received the Altavoz Lab Community Fellowship! I'm very thankful to the organization for the opportunity. I can't say too much about what exactly we'll be working on just yet. However, I can say that it will be a big-for-me project about immigrant communities in Puerto Rico with friends of this newsletter 9 Millones. So, go give them a follow if you want to see when that comes out. I'll also post about it here when that's done.
