Weather Report #23: An eerie literary horror novel, a sci-fi love story with a haunting twist, and more...
Consuming 08/04/2025

Hello, dear reader! Welcome to your weekly Weather Report, a column where I recommend a book, a movie, some possibly underlooked articles, and music for paying subscribers.
While this usually comes out on Sundays, a lack of electricity and internet conspired to prevent me from posting. We'll be back to our regular schedule next weekend.
Here's what you're getting this week:
- I won a journalism award.
- Date set for jury trial of CPA indicted for Act 20/22 scheme, and yet another Puerto Rico cop alleges his P320 went off by itself.
- A short and eerie literary horror novel about religious zealots.
- Essays, articles, and columns about: the Venezuelans renditioned to CECOT, immigration court, the internet traffic apocalypse, and Disco Elysium.
- A beautifully-shot science fiction film about star-crossed lovers with a haunting twist.
- Three songs that are rocking the indie music scene in LATAM.

What I Did This Week:
On Friday, I received an award for best breaking news story in the print category from the Association of Puerto Rican Journalists (ASPPRO). I always have conflicted feelings about being recognized for my work, and this year was no different. Glad to be recognized and this will – hopefully – allow me to do more journalism, which is the only thing that really matters to me.
Nevertheless, this newsletter continues to be written by an award-winning journalist who remains too cool for J-school.

Updates:
Jury Trial Date Set for CPA Indicted on Act 20/22 Scheme
As I reported a couple of weeks ago, the case against Gabriel Hernández, a CPA indicted for an Act 20/22 scheme, has started back up after two years of no movement. On Thursday, the court set the jury trial for 11/03/2025 - 11/26/2025, according to the court docket.
You can find documents for the case here.

Another Lawsuit from a Cop Against Sig Sauer
Yet another Puerto Rico cop's P320 has allegedly gone off by itself. In this instance, a cop's P320 allegedly went off while he was putting on his duty belt, causing "horrendous scars and impairment of [the cop's] extremities," according to the complaint.
Sig Sauer has continued to defend their product, calling it one of the "safest, most advanced pistols in the world." Several federal agencies have rejected the pistol because of safety concerns.
You can find the initial federal complaint here.
At least two other cops have filed similar complaints against Sig Sauer in Puerto Rico over the last year. You can find those cases here and here. One case was voluntarily dismissed with prejudice in March. The other lawsuit is still ongoing.
